WWII German Rangefinders

Before radar and other means, these stereoscope and coincidence rangefinders were part of the fire control systems for artillery.

Sizes on display are 1 meter, 2 meter, 3 meter and 5 meter.

The 1 meter was typically hand held and used for mortars and smaller cannons. The 5 meter was typically coastal or ship mounted.

The underlying principal is triangulation to calculate distance or height.

Interestingly, some of the museum's rangefinders on display were still in use until the 1960's in Finland.
